Knowing that cost and understanding how to lower it is an act of ‘hazard perception.’ Achieving a lower cost per page is crucial.

When buying a document production device, be it a printer or copier, the most important factor to consider is the cost. A printer might be cheap in terms of its purchase price, but the running expense is what really matters. Here we are talking about the price of consumables like toner. It is important to look at the price of the toner that your device uses and to check how many pages it can do.

If you divide the price of the toner by the yield, you get the cost per page. If you ask me what an ideal cost per page should be for a company that is serious about saving money, I would say $0.005.

Many organisations incur high costs per page unwittingly. If you multiply your printer’s cost per page by the number of pages you print per month, you will get your monthly running expenses.

If you multiply the monthly running expenses by the useful life of your printer, say sixty months, you will find out how sustainable your device is.
