ZEC fails to heed Coltart’s call

In spite of Education Minister David Coltart’s call for teachers to be excluded from participating in the constitutional referendum, the Zimbabwe Election Commission has pushed forward with their inclusion.

The Zimbabwean has learnt that numerous headmasters and teachers have been taken on board as referendum supervisors. Those who were recruited had their names submitted and vetted early last week. In Hurungwe district, under which Karoi town falls, a two day training session was conducted by officials from ZEC at a local school at the weekend.

One headmaster from Hurungwe East said he was only notified on Friday to attend the training for referendum supervisors.

“Initially, a few teachers were recruited as voter educators. We are not sure if we are not going to removed from the exercise,” he said. In February, Coltart said, “As a ministry, we are concerned about the disruption of learning exercise and we want to minimise the effects. My view is that teachers should not be used as polling officers,” he said.

He added then that he would present the ministry request to ZEC to have “a common understanding on the issue”. ZEC Public Relations Officer, Richard Runganga, would not comment.
