Buthelezi in London for Thatcher funeral

Party says former British PM played a key role in thwarting Soviet designs in southern Africa Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi MP was among more than 2000 celebrities and politicians who received a personal invitation to the funeral of Baroness Margaret Thatcher.

The Inkatha Freedom Party leader said he had remained in touch with Mrs Thatcher whom he described as "a close friend."

In the 1980s, Thatcher and Buhlelezi found themselves to be kindred spirits, committed to a non-communist outcome in the liberation of South Africa at a time when the former Soviet Union was supplying arms to the ANC.

The British prime minister called for an all-inclusive democracy and was supported in this US Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush along with German Chancellor Helmut Kohl. Her views brought Mrs Thatcher into conflict with both the UN and the Commonwealth.

However, Buthelezi has been critical of the British government's silence over the Gukurahundi genocide which happened while Mrs Thatcher was in office.

The IFP President was accompanied by his advisor and IFP MP, Dr. Mario Oriani-Ambrosini.
