Can’t get work

Dear Aunty Lisa

I am 27 years old and graduated from University five years ago. Since then I have not been able to find a job. Things did not turn out the way I anticipated. I cannot believe with how educated I am I cannot find a job. But that is not the major problem right now. My long-time girlfriend has just eloped; she says she is three months pregnant. I know for a fact I’m responsible. But how can I take care of her, how can I start a family when I am jobless like this? I am so stressed and confused. I don’t want to deny something I know for sure I am responsible for and leave the woman I love to struggle on her own. Please help me; can you get me a job as a social worker? – Jimmy

Dear Jimmy

My job is not really to look for a job for you but to try and give you advice on how you can make your situation better, which is what I am going to do.

I am not shocked or surprised that getting a job has been an insurmountable task for the past five years of your life after completing your tertiary education. I have seen many people in your situation, including my sister. What I have always advised her is to take any job offer that comes – without waiting for one that directly involves exactly what it is you are qualified for.

You cannot afford to be choosy – especially now. You have a pregnant wife to take care of and with the baby is on its way, you need to prepare a lot of things. Think outside the box and find other means to earn money. Let your real job come and find you doing something else and then you jump to it. Right now you can even find stuff to buy and sell as a means of gaining income. Starting a family has never been easy and you need to be strong and work hard for yours. There is certainly nothing that can stop you. – Aunty Lisa
