Speaking to The Zimbabwean after PAD’s launch, interim Secretary General, Norris-Johns Matarirano, said the party was youth-centred.
“We are tired of being used by these old people, they have failed us as a country.
As concerned youths we wanted to take initiative to rescue our country from these murderous war veterans. Our party is youth-centered with all our interim leadership younger than 40. We believe power lies with youths,” said Matarirano, also a former Zanu (PF) Bulawayo province Secretary for Youth Affairs.
“We are building our structures and in the United Kingdom where we expect a lot of support from young people displaced by Mugabe’s misrule.”
PAD has started a number of campaigns across the country and has begun mobilising communities. Free education and creating job opportunities are top of the party’s list of priorities.
A date for the party’s congress, where party leadership will be chosen, has not been set. Matarirano hoped it would be before the end of the year.
The party’s current leadership is spearheaded by their interim President Randy Siwela and Chairperson Simon Fernandez and Information & Publicity Secretary Evra Moyo.
Analyst, Masimba Dube, said PAD would raise the banner for a “new kind of politics”.
“PAD will be a party that stands for genuine democratic socialism and the interests of the majority. The country currently requires leadership not driven by the liberation mantra, but democratic and social values,” said Dube.
