De Jonge struggles at Crowne Plaza Invitational

Reigning Zimbabwe Sportsperson of the Year Brendon de Jonge failed to capitalise on his splendid opening round of 66 to finish 22nd at the Crowne Plaza Invitational that ended in Fort Worth, Texas, Sunday.

De Jonge then hit 70 on the second day before following that up with 68, and 70 for a six under par total of 274 to finish jointly with Steve Flesch of the USA, Brian Stuard of the USA and Graham De Laed of Canada.

De Jonge was eight shots off the winner Boo Weekly of the USA who finished on 13 under pa r 266 after posting 67, 67, 66, and another 66 on the last day of play for his first PGA title since 2008.

Weekly appeared to be losing grip as he was trailing overnight leader Matt Kuchar also of the USA by one shot on the last day of play but a four under par 66 saw him pip Kuchar who could only manage 68 on the deciding day.

In third place was another USA golfer Zach Johnson who was on 12 under par 268.

It was a very tight finish at the Crowne Plaza Invitational in which the top 20 players were separated by only five shots.

Focus now shifts to the St Jude’s Classic set for June 6 before the much talked about US Open pencilled for June 13.
