Lafarge comes to the rescue

Lafarge Cement has stepped in to help Harare City Council repair one of their grounded ambulances and have also donated a brand new vehicle in a bid to alleviate the shortage of emergency vehicles.

The city health department currently has three ambulances in operation to serve a population of four million people.

“The department of health has many broken down ambulances. Some need to be replaced and other repaired but due to lack of funds we are failing,” said the Town Clerk, Tendai Mahachi. Lafarge Health and Cooperate Affairs Manager, Washington Mutasa, said they offered to cover the costs of repairing the engine, suspension, brakes, ceiling and tyres on the Toyota Hiace Ambulance as part of their corporate social responsibility scheme.

“Lafarge has pledged $10,000 to rehabilitate this ambulance. We have also committed to providing fuel and servicing the ambulance for a period of 12 months and we have donated $6,000 for medical supplies for Mabvuku Polyclinic,” Mutasa told The Zimbabwean.

Harare Mayor, Muchadeyi Masunda, who is also a board member at the company, is said to have engineered the move.

The cement manufacturing company said the ambulances should prioritise the Mabvuku, Tafara and Greendale communities.

HCC is also planning to upgrade Mabvuku, Kuwadzana, Hatcliffe and Mbare Polyclinics into district hospitals that can offer secondary healthcare.
