It was launched by the party’s President Morgan Tsvangirai at the weekend and aims to transform Zimbabwe’s economy by removing the rich-poor gap.
“This will be achieved through strengthening and sustaining macro-economic sustainability leveraging the country’s potential in order to attain efficient inclusive and pro-poor growth that is capable of generating jobs and uplifting the standards of our people,” says the policy document.
Economic growth on its own cannot ensure human development and poverty reduction unless it is accompanied by rapid growth of productive and remunerative employment hence “the MDC will ensure that the economy accommodates every citizen”.
The MDC-T identifies itself as a social democratic party that would pursue social market economy. “The state will intervene strategically to achieve equity and social justice in the way that economic and social benefits are delivered to all in our society,” the policy says.
Among the key deliverables highlighted are inclusive growth and poverty reduction, job creation and food security and social services delivery.
As the majority of Zimbabweans live in the rural areas, rural transformation through addressing challenges such as poor infrastructure, financial exclusion, lack of essential services, food insecurity and unemployment will be prioritised.
Agriculture will be treated as a business and all who make a living out of land will be given security of ownership. Rural-based industries will be encouraged and incentivised, together with the resuscitation of infrastructure such as roads, bridges, schools, veterinary services and telecommunications.
“Since independence the essential needs of Zimbabwe’s poor have not been met. MDC-T will move beyond rhetoric and begin calculating genuine progress in a way that takes seriously ecological social values,” the party says.
