SA school kids loot foreign shops

Zimbabweans here are living in constant fear of xenophobia following last week’s violence that saw locals loot foreign-owned shops. The incident, which happened at Orange Farm on the outskirts of Johannesburg, reminded many of the hate crime that claimed at least 62 lives at its peak exactly five years ago.

Azaria Dube Nduna, founder of the Association of African Refugee Authority, who witnessed similar attacks in the past, said the recent incident was unique because it involved school children.

“I was surprised to see school children looting, stealing and committing violent crime. Instead of being at school and preparing their future, there they were, committing crime,” he said.

He challenged the South African government to implement strong measures and effective punishment for whoever committed such crimes.

“This calls for strong action from the government to prevent these acts from continuing to happen. The police, human rights organisations and other NGOs need to meet and find immediate preventive solutions,” said the civil society leader.

“There is complete lawlessness and this needs to be uprooted right from the bottom. If the cause was really the murder of a local man, as the looters claimed, then the matter should have been dealt with by the police. This gives us the picture of a lawlessness carefree country in which whoever wants to commit crime can do so, even in the presence of the police.”
