The EU channels funds for local authority developmental projects through the Urban Councils Association of Zimbabwe. The $5,000 project was started early this month and is expected to be completed before the end of this week.
Vegetable vendors, commuters and businesspeople were exposed to unpredictable weather conditions in Marondera at the old bus stops.
Marondera Mayor Farai Nyandoro said besides the sheds providing shelter, they would also improve the look of the CBD.
“Vegetable and fruit vendors will benefit most from the project as the environment is now conducive for their business,” said Nyandoro. Following the vandalisation of shelters at the bus terminus by rogue political elements after the March 2008 election, vendors have been plying their trade in the open.
Nyandoro said the project was a result of the goodwill of the EU which responded positively to council requests for funding through UCAZ.
Besides the shelter project, Marondera had applied for other funding to rehabilitate Nehanda Hall and Dombotombo Library.
The hall and library projects are yet to be approved for EU funding and would need $11,000 and $10,000 respectively to rehabilitate.
