MDC-SA leader suspended

Squabbles within the mainstream MDC in South Africa reached fever pitch this week, when the provincial leaders suspended Provincial Organising Secretary, Sam Mavhunga.

Sources within the provincial structure told The Zimbabwean that Mavhunga was suspended at the weekend, pending a disciplinary hearing.

"He has been responsible for causing disharmony within the party at a time when we are supposed to be pulling together and focusing on winning the elections back home," said a source.

"Instead of harmonising structures, he was busy creating divisions by trying to isolate Johannesburg districts from the rest of the province, mainly on personal grounds. His actions had also divided the province, resulting in deputy provincial organising secretary, Joshua Mambo Rusere and party provincial spokesman, Kumbirai Muchemwa, at some stage tendering their resignations in frustration. The resignations were later reversed, but the seeds of disharmony sworn by Mavhunga still remain."

Mavhunga, the only survivor the old provincial structure that did not see eye to eye with Johannesburg district, is allegedly still fighting the old battles with the party's biggest and most vibrant district.

A few months ago, Mavhunga broke ranks with the rest of the provincial leadership, when he sent a letter to members of the media, claiming that he had dissolved Johannesburg district, which he called an "interim" structure, but that was quickly reversed by the rest of the provincial leadership.

Before he "dissolved" Johannesburg, some of the district members accused Mavhunga of overlooking the district on party programmes and appointing a two-member committee to "babysit" it.

Early this month, the party's deputy national organising secretary, Abednico Bhebhe, is said to have also lambasted Mavhunga during his visit of South Africa.

Although Mavhunga's deputy, Rusere has reportedly been appointed to organising post in an acting capacity, provincial spokesman, Kumbirai Muchemwa, would not been drawn to discuss the latest development.

"I can only confirm that we have instituted internal processes against one of our members. Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to disclose the individual concerned or delve into the specific matters that have necessitated action by the province," said Muchemwa.

"I would like to however, reassure our members that we remain seized with the task at hand, which is to install a new Government in Zimbabwe and one that will deliver a more prosperous, just and peaceful Zimbabwe."
