Zanu farm invaders jailed

Seven Zanu (PF) activists, who resisted a High Court order to vacate a farm in Chemagora area in Zhombe, have been jailed for non-compliance. Provincial magistrate Taurai Manwere gave Ngwarai Mabheka (27), Agnes Musengi (35), Raphael Macheka (46), Beria Mabheka (35), Dialogue Mpofu (29), Medeline Mishi (53), Lawrence Mariche (23) and Ngwarai Mabheka (35) a 30-day imprisonment sentence.

Allegations against them were that on January 27, 2011, the High Court of Zimbabwe granted an order that the seven were to vacate Farm 34 Chemagora village, Zhombe owned by Mcdonald Muzuzi. The court ruled that they were not to enter, plough or seek possession of the ground at the farm.

After the court order, they were all evicted by the Deputy Sheriff. However, they went on to re-occupy the farm and threaten the owner. According to the state papers, the seven had received unlawful permission from Chief Misheck Njelele. The owner of the farm, who feared for his life, took the matter to court.

It is understood that the seven were part of a group of Zanu (PF) activists that went on the rampage in 2011 invading farms owned by fellow blacks across the province. They believed they had been left out of the party’s controversial land reform exercise which displaced thousands of productive white commercial farmers in 2000.

At that time, three farms measuring 3 500 hectares located at 21 West Gweru Block; 49 Wildbeest Block and Dobton Farm near Shurugwi, were also illegally occupied by the party’s supporters.
