Zim gets ITF praise

The International Tennis Federation recently hailed Zimbabwe’s development of the wheelchair version of the sport in recent years.

Suzie Dyrbus, the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Development Assistant, said despite the country’s mainstream tennis having taken a nose-dive at international level, wheelchair tennis players had made a significant impact.

In a recent interview with this publication, she cited a number of competitions that Zimbabwe has participated in, something she said was evidence of the growth of the sport.

“Zimbabwe competed at the BNP Paribas African Qualification in 2012 for the women and had a representative in the male event at the London 2012 Paralympic games,” said Dyrbus.

“They also have three players who are part of the ITF touring team in 2013 and two Juniors who are part of the Junior touring team. In addition, they conducted a development camp and a national junior camp in 2012, and are scheduled to undertake the same in 2013.”

She added that, while Zimbabwe was no longer a Wheelchair Tennis Development Fund project, it would still benefit from other ITF initiatives.

“They will benefit from the Junior programmes through their attendance of international Junior camps and grants to hold national Junior Camps and be part of the Junior touring team,” added Dyrbus.

Unlike a number of sports, Zimbabwe’s wheelchair tennis has defied the economic problems that have characterised the country over the years. In recent years, there have been notable achievements, particularly the awarding of The Sportsman of the Year with a Disability award to Nyasha Mharakurwa, who has won it for four consecutive years.

Sound management has been attributed to the growth of the sport in Zimbabwe, where it was formally started in 1976.
