Bafana legends in Zimbabwean tour

A team of South African football legends among them former Bafana Bafana captain Lucas Radede are billed to face a Zimbabwean football legends team on Saturday during the launch of the Zimbabwe Football Legends Trust at Rufaro Stadium.

The organising secretary of the Zimbabwe Football Legends Eric Aisam says the launch of the Zimbabwe Football Legends Trust is aimed at assisting some of the football legends who are going through difficult times and also to keep alive the flame of the players as the legends are not getting the recognition they deserve by those in football power.

A complaint that has been raised is the exclusion of former footballers in the organization of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the existence of football in Zimbabwe with the legends contending that this is their event and should have been involved.

More important is the fact that some of the former football stars are living in poverty as they are not employed as club football coaching cannot consume all of them and Aisam says they will be looking at some of the cases that need urgent attention.

Aisam says the launch will also coincide with the belated commemoration of the death of 13 fans who perished during a 2002 World Cup qualifier between the Warriors of Zimbabwe and South Africa’s Bafana Bafana at the National Sports Stadium on July 9, 2001.

The 13 players perished after riot police fired teargas at the crowd resulting in a stampede that led to death of the 13 and injury to some. The teargas was thrown after a section of the fans had thrown missiles onto the pitch in response to a provocative gesture from Bafana Bafana player Delroy Buckley after scoring South Africa’s second goal.

Aisam revealed that apart from Radebe, the likes of Helman Mkhalele, Fabian McCarthy, Fani Madiga, John Moshoe, Mark Fish, Mark Williams, amongst others, have all agreed to come and play in the game.

The likes of Moses Chunga, Brenna Msiska, Peter Ndlovu, Norman Mapeza, Madinda Ndlovu, Nesbert Saruchera, Charlie Jones, Henry Chari, and John Phiri and others, have been roped in to play for the Zimbabwe Legends.

According to Aisam, the Zimbabwe Football Association have given their thumps up to the match and the launch of the Zimbabwe Football Legends Trust.
