Council finalises $144 million deal

Managers from Harare City Council will this week visit China in an attempt to boost council assets.

Town Clerk, Tendai Mahachi, said the officials will meet with their counterparts from the China Machinery Engineering Corporation to conclude an asset supply plan and the disbursement of a $144 million loan.

“Both Harare water and sewer plants are set to change for the better at the conclusion of this $144 million loan which I, the Director of Harare Water, Waste Water Manager and Water Distribution Manager of the Department of Harare Water, will be signing with China Machinery Engineering Corporation,” Mahachi told The Zimbabwean.

He said the engineers in the water and sewer departments would also undergo familiarisation of how the new heavy equipment plants are run.

“Generally the money is going to procure pressure reducing valves and water pipes. All four major plants at Morton Jaffray, Prince Edward Water treatment plans and Firle and Crowborough sewer plants are going get heavy equipment from China,” he said.

Mahachi said part of the money would be used to procure water treatment chemicals and Harare’s water supply would improve by over 200 mega litres per day.

“We will also use $2 million to procure and install prepaid meters in 500,000 households as a pilot phase,” he added.

In 2011 HCC formally accepted $144 million loan from the China Export and Import Bank. China Machinery Engineering Corporation is expected to meet all travel and accommodation expenses for the four delegates.
