The airport was a sea of yellow and green as the Warriors fans left their homes during that time of the night to give their players a heroes’ welcome.
Football followers from various clubs in the country were united in song and dance but this time in the Warriors’ name, with the Zimbabwe Football National Supporters Liaison Officer, Simeon Jamanda, leading in the song, Ndivavo Vakomana Vekwedu.
No one could fault the fans this time around as success in Zimbabwean football had been hard to come with the Warriors turning themselves into the fall guys of African football by continually failing to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations finals.
The coaches, Ian Gorowa and Kalisto Pasuwa, were hoisted high by the fans before Gorowa was whisked away in a Mercedes Benz as stand in captain Partson Jaure also led his troops to a waiting mini bus.
That is the funny part of football as only last Sunday the same fans were chanting Gorowa’s name and sang in favour of Norman Mapeza after the Warriors played badly in the goalless draw against the Zambians at Rufaro Stadium.
Now that qualification has been secured, Zimbabwe joins the likes of Morocco, Tunisia, Mauritania, Mali, Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Burundi, and hosts South Africa for the finals. The three other qualifiers will be known by Monday.
