Chess fraternity mourns the Hyena’

Brighton Muhtunzi a former learner and chess player in Zimbabwe as well as South Africa.

He started coaching chess in South Africa as well as playing in some chess tournaments which were held there in South Africa. Chess fraternity in both Zimbabwe and South Africa were shocked by the news.

International Master Chitumbo Mwali expressed his sympathies on the untimely death of Brighton Muthunzi.

On the other hand International Master Johannes Mabusela also expressed his shock. “we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Brighton Muthunzi, a cherished member of our chess community . Brighton was not only a formidable player but also a wonderful friend and mentor to many within our community and across South Africa. His contributions to the game and our lives were immeasurable, and his absence will be profoundly felt. As we mourn this great loss, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Brighton’s family, friends, and all who knew him. May his legacy continue to inspire us all . Rest in peace, Brighton. We will always remember you. Asserted one writer in an emotional tribute to the Hyena as he was popularly known.

Yours truly once drew against the late Brighton Muthunzi in a chess tournament and we tied for the second place in a very tantalizing game. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

Apologies for the previous report which asserted that FM Mwadzura came fourth, in actual fact he came third, while FM Zhemba Jemusse came fourth in the just-ended CBZ National Chess Championships.
