Speaking at a community meeting in Mutare, CCDA chairman, Joseph Chatora, said it should be mandatory for investors in the mining industry to be responsive to community needs.
“Zimbabwe’s legal, policy and institutional frameworks governing the mining sector do not effectively promote good governance, transparency and accountability,” said Chatora. “This view is shared by all stakeholders ranging from immediate communities, Members of Parliament and some of the companies themselves.”
Residents from Chiadzwa said they were being forced to pay $3 per household for the rehabilitation of Mukwada Clinic, their local health centre.
“We all want a good clinic in our area, but if we are ordered to pay $3 per household then there is a problem,” said Lovemore Mukwada. “We are sitting on the richest land in the country but our diamonds are not benefiting us. Why not compel the diamond mining companies to help us build this clinic?”
Mbada Diamonds, Anjin Investments, Diamond Mining Corporation, Marange Resources and Genani are some of the companies mining diamonds in Chiadzwa.
