Gumbura’s case tip of an iceberg: Makoni

Activist Betty Makoni has called on women and girls to speak out on issues of abuse and be assured of justice following the case of serial rapist pastor, Robert Martin Gumbura.

Gumbura was found guilty of four counts of rape and possession of pornographic material and sentenced to 40 years in prison.

“Women and girls out there should be aware that there is a law that protects them. No woman consents to rape. Rape knows no age and so the prosecutor must review evidence presented by the women. Married women are becoming more vulnerable in churches because of fear to report such a case they consider bound to break marriages,” said Makoni.

While applauding the justice system for putting Gumbura behind bars, Makoni said government needed to investigate several cases of abuse in the apostolic sect. “The Gumbura case signals the end of sexual slavery in Zimbabwe. I get a number of women communicating with me with complains of abuse from their church leaders. There is need for a hot line in Zimbabwe where all women affected can report with confidence. The Gumbura case is just a tip of an iceberg,” said the founder of Girl Child Network Worldwide.
