Inaugural MoneyGram Zim Achievers Awards launched in SA

MoneyGram has launched the inaugural MoneyGram Zimbabwe Achievers Awards South Africa.

Organisers said at the launch in Sandton late last week that the prestigious awards ceremony would be held in November, with nominations set to open for the public on July 1, 2014.

The event would emulate the Zimbabwe Achievers Awards in the United Kingdom, now in its fourth year.

ZAA chairman, Conrad Mwanza, said the awards were an epitome of distinction in various categories that comprise the Zimbabwean community living in South Africa.

“The inaugural MoneyGram Zimbabwe Achievers Awards SA will be a unique opportunity for the estimated 2 million plus Zimbabweans in South Africa to celebrate their own successes,” said Mwanza.

“The objective of the awards is to recognise and celebrate the various individuals, companies and organisations that have kept the Zimbabwean flag flying high and have significantly contributed to growth in their respective fields,” he added.

Mwanza promised a night of glitz and glamour at the event that will see some of Zimbabwe’s best and brightest being showcased on the red carpet.

Anton Luttig, the Regional Director for South and East Africa at MoneyGram, said the international money transfer agency was proud to be the headline sponsor of the SA event, as a way of their social responsibility to nationals that have been key to its existence.

“Zimbabwe is one of our key corridors and being able to identify and recognise the success of Zimbabwean nationals gives us great joy as a company,” he said.

“Our strategic partnership with ZAA is one that we value and look to grow into the future as we continue to provide affordable and reliable money transfer services to the Zimbabwean community in South Africa and across the world,” added Mwanza.

He said his organisation looked forward to a successful awards ceremony in November.

The awards will have a number of categories that reward star performers in business, community, arts, people’s choice award, in addition to a Friends of Zimbabwe Award.

“We look forward to giving you a night of prestige and celebration of outstanding achievement and paying homage to those who go above and beyond, whilst taking their fellow citizens with them,” said Richard Moyo, the ZAA SA CEO.

A number of people who spoke to this paper said the awards, overdue by their terms, were a welcome event in a country that houses the highest number of Zimbabwean nationals in the Diaspora.
