No changes to Davis Cup team

Tennis Zimbabwe have made no changes to the Zimbabwean Davis Cup team for September’s Africa Zone Group Three qualifiers, slated for Casablanca, Morocco.

The same team that lost out to Egypt in the play-offs last year has been retained, with Takanyi Garanganga the top player in the team that also includes doubles specialist, Mark Fyn, Benjamin Lock and Tinotenda Chanakira.

Observers have pointed out that there is no way Zimbabwe Tennis could have come up with new national team players as there has not been any new talent coming up in tennis.

Fourteen teams will gather in Casablanca to fight out for the two places in the Africa Zone Group Two next year.

Algeria, Benin, Botswana, Kenya, Libya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tunisia, Cameroon, the Ivory Coast as well as Zimbabwe will fight for those two slots. This is the fifth year running that Zimbabwe has taken part in the Africa Zone Group Three qualifiers without success.

Non-playing captain Martin Dzuwa, a former member of the Davis Cup team himself, said the postponement would give his team enough time to prepare now that the players knew who had been picked and who had not.

Garanganga and Fyn will play in the singles but Finn is likely to partner Lock in the doubles, as the former does not have a good doubles record.

Zimbabwe hold the record of being Africa’s best performer in the David Cup, after they reached the quarter-finals in 1998, where they lost to Italy. On their way, the Byron Black-led team overcame the likes of Great Britain, Croatia, Ukraine, and Australia.
