Research by IYDV in areas surrounding Bindura revealed that poor service delivery impacted heavily on young women, forcing them to spend most of their time fetching water and firewood.

“Young women should take active part in council chambers, ward development committees, village development committees and other platforms where decisions influencing priorities are taken,” said the report.

Glanis Changachirere, director of IYDV, urged stakeholders to promote practices that would ensure young women and girls become part of decision-making in the delivery of social services. Delegates urged the organisation to hold local authorities accountable for lack of service delivery.

CSOs were urged to play their part by working with ward coordinators and health workers whose efforts were hampered by lack of resources. Corruption and poor service delivery go hand-in-hand and expose women to abuse.

“Corruption and poor service delivery would worsen poverty among communities, which tend to claim more casualties among women than men,” delegates were told.
