Bigger than football

Dear Aunty Lisa

My son is very energetic and he loves sports so much – I am worried that he hardly talks about school. His report is good every term and I want him to maintain that. But I get worried that all that is in his mind is football.

His sports teacher has told us he is one of their best football players and he brought home an award inscribed MVP from a tournament. With the World Cup on going, he makes it his bible, he can tell you who is playing who and who is going to the next round. He does his homework and everything but the love for football is worrying. I am afraid he may lose focus on his studies. What can I do to make him dream bigger than just being a footballer? – Worried Mum

Dear Worried Mum

I want to challenge you with something. Go on the internet and get to the sports section of any of the most popular international news website. Just find out how much football players in the English Premiership League earn. You will be shocked they earn more than the noblest profession you can think of outside sports.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your son dreaming to become a footballer. He needs your support and guidance. From what you have said I think your son is someone really focused you should not be worried. He does his homework and his grades are good. He is just more vocal about football than he is about academics.

The results are there for you to see, he is a talented young man both in sports and academics and he is doing well to strike that balance as a student athlete. You should be proud of him. One thing I want to plead with you is to go watch him play the game. You talk as if you have never been to any of his football matches. That is so bad, your son needs your support and he may be the one of the few if not only one whose family won’t be there to cheer him on if he is attending a private school.

He needs to know that his family is strongly behind him in his dreams and that they believe in him. It is important for his self-confidence. – Aunty Lisa
