
The company commissioned the first of these in Mutare recently, with the rest expected to be distributed around the country.
“We are currently showing MSD how to set up the stations,” said FI president Patrick Benichou. “This equipment is based on modern technology and can be accessed internationally by other meteorological departments. It has a lifespan of between 15 to 20 years,” he added.
The French Ambassador, Laurent Delahousse, said the development was a clear sign of France’s interest in investing in Zimbabwe. Unlike other countries who just want to milk resources from the country, France intended to venture into long-term investments beneficial to both governments, he said.
“When French companies invest in a country, it’s not for a quick buck. They are here to invest for the future, they are here to stay, they are here to create jobs. We want to come back to Zimbabwe. We want to help … for the future,” he added.
“As you are aware the friendship between EU and Zimbabwe is improving, which is a welcome move. EU will resume its direct cooperation with Zimbabwe at the end of the year, provided everything goes well,” he said
However, it remains to be seen whether the European Council of Ministers votes to lift the embargo against Harare later this year as Mugabe is back to his old self threatening to kick-out the remaining whites from their farms.
