MP backs land invaders

Chiredzi North MP Robert Mukwena has clashed with the government over the fate of 500 villagers currently occupying Samba Ranch owned by Croco Motors boss Moses Chingwena.

The villagers have vowed to stay put on the property but the government has already resolved to relocate them arguing that they invaded a farm owned by a fellow black man.

“We cannot put a lot of resources to relocate 500 people just to protect one individual,” said Mukwena. “To me it does not make any sense and it would be better to give Chingwena another farm and leave the 500 families to continue with their farming activities,” said Mukwena.

“I am totally against the government on this issue and I am calling on the farm occupiers to be calm and resist the eviction,” he added.

Masvingo provincial administrator Felix Chikovo said there was no going back on the evictions as it had been resolved that all people occupying black-owned properties should be removed.

Government sources said that Chingwena bought the property before the onset of the land reform programme, but he was not available for comment.
