Recent statements by Grace Mugabe that vice president Joice Mujuru was corrupt, jealous, divisive and unsuitable to remain in the Presidium have angered some veterans – who have split with one section led by Joseph Chinotimba aligned to Grace and the other led by provincial chair Lidia Matatu aligned to Mujuru.

“If people continue being dissatisfied with what is happening, it is possible to have a split. I think the President (Mugabe) has the key to all these issues. We do not want factionalism and if it continues we don’t know what will become of the party,” said Matatu.

One war veteran who spoke on condition of anonymity said Grace’s political capital and knowledge were very low. “She is very unpopular and those who are using her know that too, but she has become very ambitious. Her permanent anger when attacking Mai Mujuru reveals that she (Grace) knows she is going nowhere,” he said.

He described Grace’s backers as people who were intent on destroying the party from within. “If Grace has her way and that of her backers, namely to overtake Joice in the vice presidency, that will certainly split Zanu (PF),” he said. The chairman of the Zimbabwe Liberation War Veterans Association, Jabulani Sibanda, has refused to attend Grace’s rallies. “I do not want to be part of a group that insults the vice-president of our country. This is much uncalled for and Zimbabweans must stand up to that,” he said.
