Tsvangirai will not accept govt post

Former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai will not sacrifice democracy for a top government post, his spokesperson has said. Luke Tamborinyoka was responding to questions from The Zimbabwean regarding media reports that Zanu (PF) wanted to appoint Tsvangirai to a senior government post on condition he admits that President Robert Mugabe and his party won the 2013 elections fairly.

“It is not possible for Tsvangirai to join the Zanu (PF) government as he maintains that the disputed elections were rigged and that legitimate leadership should come out of a democratic process,” said Tamborinyoka. “Tsvangirai’s position is that fresh and credible elections must be held to come up with a democratically elected government. The politics of accommodation will not work.”

Obert Gutu, MDC-T spokesperson, said the 2013 election remained stolen and will never be legitimised. “Though I am not president Tsvangirai’s spokesperson, our position as a party is that the 2013 harmonised election was stolen,” Gutu said.

Rejoice Ngwenya, a respected political analyst, warned Tsvangirai against joining the ‘illegal’ Zanu (PF) government as it would only serve to recognise Mugabe’s presidency. “Instead of making the mistake of propping up the Mugabe administration by joining it as a top worker, Tsvangirai should push for the implementation of outstanding reforms ahead of the 2018 polls,” he said. “The nation would be shocked if Tsvangirai joins the Mugabe administration in the wake of the South Africa court report that the 2002 election did not meet regional or international standards for a free and fair poll,” said Norman Tirivangani, a Harare shop assistant.

Gorden Mutize, a Murewa businessman, said since Mugabe and Zanu (PF) rigged previous elections, Tsvangirai should not accept a government post. “In 2009 he joined the Government of National Unity to save people’s lives – not for his personal benefit. This time around he should stay clear of any government appointment meant to satisfy personal interests,” Mutize said, adding that Zanu (PF) underrated Tsvangirai’s quest for true democracy.
