Cops disrupt power cuts demo

Residents last week fought running battles with the police as they demonstrated against frequent power outages. Organised by the Masvingo Residents’ Trust, they gathered at the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions in the city centre with the intention of marching to the Zimbabwe Power Company offices to express their displeasure over power cuts.

Police descended on the scene and caused the residents to run in different directions fearing for their lives. At least three people were arrested for public violence during the commotion.

The trust’s programmes co-ordinator, Prosper Tiringindi, named the three as Simba Hove, Misheck Gavi, and Honest Makasi. “We had a meeting earlier on where we invited Zimbabwe Power Company officials to come and explain the power outages but they did not turn up,” said Tiringindi.

“This did not go down well with residents, who agreed to stage a demonstration over the power outages.”

Meanwhile the Zimbabwe Power Company says it has embarked on power generation expansion projects to boost electricity supplied. These include the Hwange power generation expansion project, the Batoka power generation project and the Kariba south power expansion project.

All these projects involve the Sinohydro Corporation Company of China. But Energy and Power Development Minister Dzikamai Mavhaire said the country would not have enough power until 2018.

“I do not want to lie to the nation. We do not have the capacity to generate enough power for the whole country – but we have put in place measures to increase our generation capacity,” he said.
