CIO officer accused of robbing soldier

A Central Intelligence Organisation operative has been dragged before the courts facing a charge of robbing a member of the Zimbabwe National Army while he was relieving himself near the president’s offices complex in the city. The soldier was in plain clothes at the time of the incident.

Prosecutor Bernard Nyoni told the court that CIO operative Andrew Dumba, 54, teamed up with five other unidentified men to assault, abduct and rob Dennis Manyongori (26) of Five Brigade Headquarters. Dumba denies the charge.

Nyoni said on 15 November last year, at around 6 am, the complainant tried to relieve himself at a bush near Dumba’s offices and was spotted by six men who then followed and grabbed him.

He said the suspects took Manyongori to Dumba's office where they allegedly assaulted the complainant several times all over his body using a plank and a broom stick.

The court heard that Dumba then ordered Manyongori to surrender all the money he had – $300.

The prosecutor further stated that the complainant was then ordered to vacate the place using a door which was at the back of the building.

Presiding magistrate Phatekile Msipa finally granted him $100 bail coupled with strict warnings that he should not interfere with witnesses. In 2008 CIO officer Frank Silani was convicted after having been found in possession of $3,000 fake notes of $50 denomination.
