Journalists ordered to switch off phones

Journalists covering parliament on 18 February 2015 were ordered by security officials to switch off their cellphones as opposition MPs protested the absence of several Cabinet ministers during the question and answer session.

Mayhem ensued after Deputy Speaker Mabel Chinomona ordered MPs Solomon Madzore and Tabitha Khumalo (Movement for Democratic Change), to be evicted from the house.

The opposition MPs then broke into song and dance which was countered in similar fashion by those from the ruling Zanu PF.

Freelance journalist Godwin Mangudya, said he was escorted from the press gallery by a security officer after asking on why they were being ordered to switch off their phones.

He was only released after the security official consulted his superior who advised him that journalists were in fact allowed to bring phones into parliament, but not to answer or make calls during sessions.
