The donation was made at a Lions Club zones members’ social gathering last week, attended by Parents of Children with Cancer Association and the general public.

Catherine Muchechetere, outgoing president Lions Club of Harare City, who played a key role in the sourcing of the donation, told The Zimbabwean that, the goodwill was as a result of a call made by the Lions Club region for affiliate zones to donate in cash and kind towards the welfare of the victims.

“The donated clothes were sourced by Lions Club of Harare City from individuals and generous organisations. The clothes would benefit victims of all age groups and sexes, from babies to adults.

“Lions Club assists with cash and kind to victims of natural disasters,” said Muchechetere, citing the Tokwe Mukosi flood victims as other beneficiaries who received a cash donation from the club.

The Harare donation was handed over to Jonah Machaya, Lions Club regional chairperson, who will forward the donation to the beneficiaries.

Besides victims of natural disasters, Muchechetere revealed, the Lions Club assists organisations such as Parents of Children with Cancer Association.

The Association is provided with meeting venue among other required aid.

Bigboy Madzivanzira, secretary Lions Club Zone one and Parents of Children with Cancer, said: “Lions Club has been assisting the needy and other marginalised members of communities.”

PCC A took the opportunity to present a certificate of appreciation to Lions Club of Harare City, as a token of appreciation for supporting and improving the quality of life of kids with cancer.

Floods that charactorised the 2014-2015 rain season left 500 families displaced in Muzarabani, Mbire and Mt Darwin in Mashonaland Central Province.

The most affected areas included Mashumbi Pools, Mbire, Kanyemba, Chikafa, Muzarabani and Mukumbura among other places.

Josphat Jaji, Mashonaland Central Provincial Civil Protection Unit chairperson, said the situation was bad as some people were marooned by floods for several days.

“We appeal for tents, food, clothing and medicine to help the affected families,” said Jaji, at the height of the floods.

Christopher Shumba, CPU Mashonaland West Provincial chairperson, said the floods had taken their toll on economic infrastructure.

At least 10 people reportedly lost their lives to the floods.
