Eyewitnesses said Mugabe almost fell over when he tumbled down a short flight of stairs after addressing Zanu (PF) supporters and government officials.
He had to be helped up by his aides who whisked him away in his traditional convoy.
Mugabe controversially became the AU chair for the next twelve months when the continental bloc met in Ethiopia.
The president, who will turn 91 is just over two weeks, is reported to be suffering from a host of ailments associated with old age, among them prostate cancer and poor eyesight.
