A recent statement by ZAPU and its president Dumiso Dabengwa said the farm, which houses Shalom Campsite and Ebenezer Training Centre, was a hive of entrepreneurial activities, directly benefitting many jobless youths and women through employment and agriculture training.
“‘As a pro-people revolutionary party, Zapu notes with disgust the recent invasion of Maleme Farm owned by David Cunningham by President Mugabe’s lieutenant, Mr Mashingaidze. We and the people of Matabeleland have joined forces in the fight to stop the farm takeover. Mashingaidze has recently sought to forcefully occupy Maleme farm with the assistance of his party, Zanu (PF) and its thugs. The takeover is disrupting farming activities that have benefited thousands of local people,” reads the statement.
“The whole province has been benefiting from the farm’s extensive poultry farming project while the Christian community at large has come to regard Maleme farm as its home due to its cheap and conducive boarding facilities.” What is more shocking, Zapu noted, is that this latest invasion confirms fears that as most Zimbabweans are swimming in poverty “the clueless government is setting its eyes on looting from the ordinary people”.
There are reports that Cunningham was ordered not to move any property from the farm, as doing so would constitute theft. “This is clearly a fraudulent act of the highest order and we utterly condemn this heinous crime against Cunningham and the people of Matobo,” said Zapu.
