Speaking at a handover ceremony of 200 dustbins to his Ministry by the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) in the capital today, Chombo however seemed to contradict himself when he said that the high levels of littering in Harare was attributable to the shortage of “receptacles”.
“I am sad to say that most Zimbabweans have lost their civic pride and feel no shame discarding their litter wherever they stand or throwing it from their vehicles as if Zimbabwe is a giant dustbin. I accept that sometimes there is no suitable receptacle for litter and this hand over today from the Environmental Management Agency will certainly provide our local authorities with enough bins to compliment their efforts in presenting our capital and other urban centers as hygienic and beautiful places to live, play and do business,” said Chombo.
He said Zimbabweans needed to do away with their “careless” habits of throwing litter everywhere.
“If our people do not change the habits of the careless discarding of rubbish, the bins will simply remain unused. I therefore call on every Zimbabwean to make a conscious decision today to stop creating litter and instead create an environment that we can all be proud of,” said Chombo.
Environment Minister, Saviour Kasukuwere said that government was formulating an integrated solid waste management plan that would act as a guiding framework for dealing with solid waste management issues.
