Formula One causes tension

Dear Aunty Lisa

I am a young woman aged 21 and I live with my sister and her husband at their home. I really love Formula One and so does my brother-in-law. My sister has no clue about the sport and I feel so weird when we talk about it a lot during races.

My sister is annoyed and I am caught in between avoiding talking to my brother-in-law too much in order to please my sister and also I cannot ignore him when he asks me for updates and stuff.

F1 weekends are weird when the two of us would be glued to the TV while my sister will be trying to send me around to do things like cooking to distract me or force me to join her in the kitchen. What do I do? I can’t stop loving the sport to please my sister and I can’t tell my brother-in-law to watch in silence and not discuss with me. I hate making my sister feel out of place. Please advise me. – Patricia

Dear Patricia

I feel sorry for you for the situation that you find yourself in. You have done absolutely nothing wrong and you are just trying to be nice to your sister and her husband.

You need to understand your sister though, she envies your knowledge and love for the sport because it puts you close to her husband, while her lack of knowledge drifts her away from him.

You need to help your sister know more about the sport, get her to know the rules and generally how the races are conducted and persuade her to join you as you watch. You may also get your brother-in-law involved in roping her in. For example you could pretend not to know something and ask him to explain it to your sister and you.

I think she is feeling left out and we all know that is not a good feeling. She needs to be part of the team and right now what is going on makes her really jealous, that is why she is always trying to distract you during the race so you move out of the picture a bit. I love that you are innocently doing what you do without any ulterior motives and you really want your sister to be involved.

If that does not work perhaps you could go and watch the races with a friend? That would make life a lot easier for you . – Aunty Lisa
