Obsessed with cricket

Dear Aunty Lisa

I have a four-year-old son who is crazy about cricket.

With the ICC Cricket World Cup being shown on television recently, he was so excited and he would sit and watch closely as if he understands what is happening.

He has recently been taking anything that looks like a bat and hitting anything that looks like a ball at home. For example, one day he had my wooden spoon and he hit the light bulbs we had bought.

He has developed a real obsession for the sport and I just don’t know what to do with him. – Mai Panashe

Dear Mai Panashe

He is young to have developed such a passion for a particular sport, but I don’t think you should look at your son’s love for cricket or sport as an obsession or as a negative thing. Some children do have such passions at a very early age – and if properly nurtured this can turn into a wonderful gift. Your son has found something he loves and I think you should help him direct his attention to that sport and help him discover and develop his talent.

He may be the next big thing not only on the local cricket stage but internationally. The sports stars you see today were not taught to master their sport while in High School. It was mostly something their parents encouraged them to do and supported them in while they were still young.

It is important to identify what your child is good at during these early stages of his life and help him develop his talent. Maybe it is time to buy him a real bat and a real ball. This will help him to understand that you do not want him to go around smashing things in the house. – Aunty Lisa
