PSL Round-up

The 2014 PSL surprise runners-up, ZPC Kariba, have already fired warning shots that this year they could again go ahead with their title chase against the odds.

The combative outfit, who were narrowly beaten to the prestigious trophy by Dynamos on the last day of the campaign, have so far posted the biggest victory with a 5-2 demolition of Mutare-based army side Buffaloes.

In the opening three matches, Saul Chaminuka’s side has the highest tally of goals, having banged the nets 10 times. More interesting is the fact that the side’s attacking midfielder, Raphael Manuvire, is also one of the three players to have grabbed a brace in the opening three matches.

The former Chegutu High School student also sits on the apex of scorers with four goals, ahead of 44 other players that have found the nets in the 16-team league. Artwell Nyamiwa, another ZPC Kariba ace, is second top goal scorer with three goals. Norman Mapeza’s FC Platinum, booted out of the Caf Confederations Cup last weekend, are now back fighting for the league crown again and are yet to shine under Norman Mapeza.

In the season’s opener, they came from behind to squeeze a 2-2 draw in their match against debutants Dongo Sawmills at home, before they fell 1-2 against Caps United in their second game of the season. That run will naturally pile pressure on Mapeza and his troops who now need to immediately plunge into their bag of tricks and draw out magic to start winning.

In the weekend fixtures, Highlanders will welcome Chapungu to Barbourfields Stadium, while champions DeMbare have a seemingly easy tie against Flame Lily.

How Mine will host Harare City in Bulawayo, while Manicaland will be treated to derby time when Dongo Sawmills clash with Buffaloes. Platinum will be at home to Chicken Inn, with Wha-Wha and Tsholotsho putting up a battle of the debutants.
