Zimbabwe Cricket and national team coach Dave Whatmore is in contractual discussions aimed at extending his attachment to the team.

His initial contract with the Chevrons was up to the 2015 World Cup, but the managing director of Zimbabwe Cricket, Alistair Campbell, revealed recently that negotiations were at an advanced stage, with chances being that Whatmore would stay.

“Discussions are being held and I’m hopeful that they will be concluded pretty shortly,” said Campbell. “He has definitely expressed an interest to work with the team and with Zimbabwe Cricket. He sees potential and he sees that he can make a difference which is great.”

Although the Chevrons won only one of their six World Cup matches, they have shown great improvements during the short time that Whatmore has been with them. Their more than 200 score in a tough group that also included India, South Africa, the West Indies and Pakistan, showed that given time, they could be a force to reckon with.

Zimbabwe, however, will have to do without former captain Brendon Taylor, who has quit the team to pursue club cricket with English county side Northamptonshire. But there is also good news in that former leg-spinner, Graeme Cremer, is returning to international cricket. Cremer, 28, played 11 Tests and 43 ODIs before he took an indefinite break from the game two years ago. Advanced talks have been held about Cremer getting a winter contract, with a view to receiving a full contract when the next batch is awarded in August.
