Chiefs from around Manicaland Province were fed with rotten meat and left stranded in Mutare on Friday after celebrations to mark the province’s victory in the National Youth Games last month.

Manicaland got 12 gold medals and the local organising committee held victory celebrations at Chancellor Primary School with Provincial Affairs minister Mandi Chimene as the guest of honour.

The chiefs complained to The Zimbabwean that the treatment they received was not befitting of their status. “To say we were treated like ordinary citizens is an understatement. How can the organisers of the event give us meat prepared from decomposing goats and cattle heads while the minister and other senior government officials had lunch at a five-star hotel? The food we were served was horrible and even a vagrant could not eat that food,” said a chief from Chipinge who refused to be named for fear of losing government perks.

He also claimed that they were not reimbursed their transport expenses. “Usually when we attend such functions we are provided with fuel or bus fare. After coming from areas as far as Mahenye we were not given anything. Imagine some of the 31 chiefs who attended woke up as early as 1 am and had to go back to their areas hungry and tired,” said another chief.
