Mabvuku win convent chess festival

Mabvuku high school senior boys team are the winners of the inaugural Convent chess festival held on 19 September at Convent school.This was a four rounds teams tournament in which Mabvuku won all their games. They won the final round 3-1 against Prince Edward team who had Alpha Chaendera on board one.

cbc-bulawayo-chess-6645Munyaradzi Thom prevailed over Chaendera in a pulsating game which was very tactical. On board two Bwanali lost to Trevor Macheka in another interesting end game, while Solomon Chimuzura lost to Greenwell Chimanya on board three. Phillip Jekera won his game on board four to seal Mabvuku’s victory.

Mufakose 2 High drew against Prince Edward before winning their final game to finish with 3,5 out of 4 games which they played and become the second team after Mabvuku to finish without losing a single game. In third place was Dzivarasekwa and Prince Edward who came fourth on butcholtz.

Munyaradzi Thom was the best player on board one with a perfect score winning a Tablet sponsored by Business Optimisation Systems. Trevor Macheka was the best player on board two while Greenwell Chimanya was the best player on board three. Phillip Jekera was the best player on board four.

In the junior boys section Mufakose 2 High won the section followed by Prince Edward and St. Georges and these got prizes in the form of medals and certificates as well as a shield for the winning team.In the girls division Dominican Convent won the division followed by Mufakose 2 Girls team and Malbereign Girls High school. Isabel Masawi won the best player on board one in the senior girls division and also won a tablet as well as a gold medal.

In the junior girls division Oriel Girls High school won followed by Dominican Convent and Arundel Girls team. Marcia Dzimba won the best player on board one collecting a tablet a gold medal and a shield for the team for coming out tops.Falcon College came all the way from Esigodini to attend the tournament as well as other schools like Churchill and St. Georges.

The surprise result of the tournament was when Takunda Mudzingwa of St. Georges lost to Leeroy Mutukwa of Mabvuku B team and the game ended in a draw.This was a well organised event considering that the school was hosting for the first time. It left some good memories to the players as well as the staff members who were part of this tournament.Lewis Kahoba and Munashe Ziome ran the event with the assistance of FA Farirai Gumbe.
