Biti calls for urgent measures

There is urgent need to establish a National Transitional Authority (NTA) to avoid the national crisis that the country is heading for due to Zanu PF failures, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Tendai Biti has said.

President Biti made the call on Saturday while addressing provincial party members at a packed Charles Austin Theatre Hall in Masvingo town.

“Zimbabwe needs soft landing to avoid a total collapse.  There is need for a moment of reflection and introspection as the country is facing serious economic challenges because of Zanu PF.  It is clear that Zanu PF has failed,” President Biti who was accompanied by members of the party’s management committee said.

“The NTA will be a temporary government that will seek to avoid a war in Zimbabwe.  How will Zimbabwe react when its President who is nearing 92 years does not wake up one morning?

There will be chaos in the faction ridden Zanu PF.  That is why the NTA will implement an emergency economic recovery plan, harmonise the country’s laws to the Constitution, restoration of the social contract, ensure that there is peace in the country and that there are conditions for holding free and fair elections,” he said.

“This once great empire of Munhumutapa is now a laughing stock.  It is now a museum of how not to do things.  It is a failure by the Zanu PF government and there failure is getting worse.  Zanu PF and its Cabinet ministers are now psychiatrics and that is why in the PDP we are saying another Zimbabwe is possible.

“The economy of the country has sunk so low that we are now a country with the highest divorce rate in Africa as families are failing to cope with the economic meltdown.  Domestic violence is on the rise.  That is the legacy of Robert Mugabe.  It is a legacy of self-destruction.  Masvingo is a province with the highest literacy rate in the country but it is the least developed especially in terms of rural development and the battle is to develop the province.

There are three million Zimbabweans who are in South Africa who have run away from Robert Mugabe while millions more are in Botswana, UK and USA.  They do not want to be in those countries but in Zimbabwe but they are there because of the gospel according to Robert Mugabe.

“We are now innocent bystanders as we have no control in our country.  We have become desperate people.  There is fatalism in the country, we have become orphans,” said President Biti.

“However, in PDP we say NO.  The PDP is a party that has a new fingerprint.  The PDP’s DNA is of love and a committed leadership. We are representatives of the true Zimbabwe.  The PDP is a party that believes in inclusivity.  Zanu PF is playing gods with our lives and we say NO, enough is enough.  It is time we took a mindset and confront the beast called Zanu PF.  That is why we have created a new brand of politics.

“Let us make the PDP strong.  Let us learn to work with others and create a grand coalition.  That is why the PDP remains the only party in Zimbabwe that was launched with policies, ARREST and HOPE,” said President Biti.

He said the PDP’s policy documents, the Agenda for the Restoration and Rehabilitation of Electoral Sustainability (ARREST) and the Holistic Programme for Economic Change (HOPE) mainly focused on job creation, on devolution as local communities should have control of their resources, national healing and electoral reforms so that conditions for another Zimbabwe are possible.

The PDP national leadership has been holding well attended provincial assembly meetings across the country following the holding of its successful inaugural congress at the City Sports Centre in Harare last September.  The leadership led by President Biti has been to; Manicaland, Midlands South, Bulawayo and Matabeleland North provinces.
