Senior health authorities this week exposed several government departments that do not have the required sanitary facilities to operate in the Central Business District.

Top of the list are the Ministry of Lands, CMED, the Ministry of Mines and the Housing Ministry.
Also in the limelight are the Provincial offices at the Government Complex, the Ministry of Home Affairs Gweru District and the administrative block that only has staff toilet facilities.

A local doctor who declined to be identified expressed concern after having visited the offices. He urged the Registrar’s office to deal with the toilet, water and rubbish bin crisis before the problem got out of control.

‘’We warned the office early last year. The onus is now on them to heed the calls of the clients and avert any possible danger and make sure that Gweru will not experience what Harare once went through – a typhoid out- break,’’ said the concerned doctor

Contacted for comment the Gweru district Registrar Mr T. Mariga was quick to point a finger the Ministry of Public Works. Asked whether they launched a complaint to the responsible Ministry concerning the crisis he said as staff members they have no problem with the toilets.

“Why have you come here while this complex is comprised of three Ministries, us the Home Affaisr, Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Housing and CMED (Pvt) Ltd?, “ he said.

When our news crew visited the government complex we found the pipes in some of the toilets had been vandalized, while in others, the toilets were overflowing and no action has been taken to empty them.

Another official with the Health Ministry at the complex says under the public health act, the government establishments should be closed because they don’t meet the operational requirements. They should be given a short ultimatum to either rectify the anomalies or face closure.

But the decision to expose publicly the names of the government establishments that don’t have the required facilities has not gone down well with some of the officials occupying the offices.

Inside source said three years ago the same government establishments were in the spotlight but municipal officials relaxed their decision after they promised to rectify the conditions.
