Kombayi was reportedly arrested by a group of top police officers at his Midlands Hotel while Matawu was picked up at home.

The pair’s lawyer, Artwell Chinamatira of Dube and Gundu legal practitioners, confirmed the arrests.

Chinamatira said the two were accused of criminal abuse of office.

The allegations include hosting MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai at a resort game park in Gweru using council funds and the claimed sale of Gweru City Council cattle to council employees.

Other charges include allowing a council employee to go on study leave on full pay and awarding a tender to one Mandaza for the servicing of new Mkoba 21 suburb.

The arrest comes at a time the High Court had ruled that Kombayi and 10 other MDC-T councillors, who were on suspension, should resume their duties.

Last month Bulawayo High Court judge, Justice Francis Bere, ordered Local Government minister, Saviour Kasukuwere, to reinstate the 11 councillors saying their suspension was unconstitutional and therefore null and void.

This week, Kombayi and his colleagues have been camping at Town House with council officials refusing to entertain them despite the High Court order.
