The bus, owned by the private company Transportes 2002, was travelling from the Manica provincial capital, Chimoio, to the western city of Tete.
The attack took place in Honde, in Barue district. This was the fourth ambush in the Honde region in the space of a month. The most serious attack was on 5 March, also against a bus, in which the driver and one of the passengers were killed.
Gunmen tried to stop the Transporters 2002 bus at about 08.00. But the driver drove through the ambush. As he did so the Renamo gang raked the bus with gunfire. Two of the passengers were severely injured, and were taken to the Manica Provincial Hospital in Chimoio. The third injured passenger opted to continue his journey to Tete.
At a press conference in Chimoio at the end of the morning, the spokesperson for the Manica Provincial Police Command, Elcidia Filipe, said the police were continuing to search for the authors of the attack.
