Court: Mugabe insult Zanu PF youths freed

THREE expelled Zanu PF provincial youth leaders accused of insulting President Robert Mugabe, his wife and other party officials walked free Wednesday after prosecutors failed to get statements from its key witness.

courtGodfrey Tsenengamu, 33, Godwin Gomwe, 37, and Vengai Musengi, 36, were charged inciting public violence but contested further remand arguing that the state was not ready for trial.

Prosecutors told court that they were failing to secure a statement from witness Kudzai Chipanga, the Zanu PF youth league deputy secretary.

In addition, the State is yet to get WhatsApp messages allegedly circulated by the three inciting violence.

Magistrate Tendai Mahwe ruled that the State would have to continue by way of summons.

The three youth leaders were accused of holding a press conference with the intention of inciting war veterans to commit public violence.

They were also claimed to have circulated WhatsApp messages mobilising youths to commit public violence and tearing and burning a t-shirt inscribed ‘Vanhu vese kuna Amai’ (Everyone to the Mother of Nation) which is understood to refer to First Lady Grace Mugabe.

Prosecutors had sought to have the case remanded to another date for the fourth time, but the application was opposed by the accused’s lawyer, Zivanai Macharaga.

Macharaga said further remand would be unfair for his clients who continue wasting resources coming to the courts only for the case to be postponed.

Sebastin Mutizirwa appeared for the State.
