This action came after demonstrations by Gweru city workers committee who registered anomaly cases against Matawu,  Gweru Mayor, Hamutendi Kombayi and the late deputy Mayor Councillor,  Artwell Matyorauta accused Matuwa of being party to alleged fraud and abuse of office before formally handing over the case to the Minister of local government, Saviours Kasukuwere.

“We have called this press conference to inform the media that a board of inquiry investigating Matawu have concluded their deliberations and have found him guilty of 15 out of the 29 counts. They recommended that he either be reinstated, punished or dismissed.”

“However, because we cannot, by law, dismiss a senior officer without the approval of the Local Government board, the commissioners applied to the board who have decided to terminate the services of Matawu back-dated to 15 January 2016, in the interest of the both the Gweru City Council and residents,” announced Gweru City Council Commission Chairperson, Mr. Tsungai Mhangami.

Matawu’s services were termination due to gross incompetence and negligence in the performance of his duties, poor conduct and inconsistency in the fulfilment of his conditions of employment.

“The Commissioners will shortly advertise for a replacement for the town clerk’s position. We decided to share this information with the media to stop speculation and the spreading of rumours. The city was moving like an unguided missile of which Matawu was not in control, with the result that all municipal departments deteriorated,” said Mhangami.

Although the City Council board of inquiry found adequate reason to dismiss Matawu, the courts did not find him guilty of breaking any laws.
