The decision taken by the war veterans on Thursday marks a major turning point in the Zimbabwean politics.

There is now a complete divorce between the former fighters of the liberation struggle and Zanu PF.

The war veterans feel completely let down by Robert Mugabe who has decided to elevate the political status of his wife, Grace, and endorse her as the leader of the divisive Zanu PF Generation 40 (G40) faction which includes Jonathan Moyo, Saviour Kasukuwere and Patrick Zhuwao.

That Mugabe has taken sides in his party’s factional fights is clearly reflected in the recent suspension of the Prosecutor General, Johannes Tomana, a dye in the wool loyalist of Vice President Emerson Mnangagwa and the speed Zanu PF took to expel convicted rapist Munyaradzi Kereke from Parliament even before his appeal against conviction had been exhausted at the High Court.

Although the stated convicts indeed deserve the fate which befell them, they were at one time protected by the same corrupt Zanu PF.

However, as the PDP, we welcome the position taken by the war veterans in understanding and appreciating what we have always said about this evil, corrupt, murderous and rogue Zanu PF regime.

We appreciate that the war veterans have resolved to reaffirm the founding provisions of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, respect the rule of law and good governance.

They have noted how the Mugabe regime has resorted to the use of violence to crush perceived enemies including peaceful citizens holding demonstrations against his misrule and corruption.

We sincerely hope the war veterans will not renege but will uphold to what is right and continue to see the Zanu PF regime for what it is; ruthless, unjust, power mongering and kleptocratic.

However, we are aware that the country faces an implosion if there are no immediate steps taken by all stakeholders to avert this and steer economic revival that would put an end to more than three decades of impoverishment and violence.

As the PDP, we restate our position that Zimbabweans need to work towards a National Convergence Platform (NCP) and push for the coming in place of a National Transitional Authority (NTA).

The NTA will among other things manage the transition period and will implement an emergency economic recovery plan for the country, harmonise the country’s laws to the Constitution, work towards the restoration of the social contract, ensure that there is peace in the country and that there are conditions for holding free and fair elections.
