On heroes day eve, police charge Woza members

Police in Bulawayo on Sunday 07 August 2016 charged nine Women ofZimbabwe Arise (WOZA) members with criminal nuisance after they werearrested at Queens Sports Club and accused of blocking an entrance to the sports ground during the Zimbabwe and New Zealand cricket match.

WOZA_March-Through-Bulawayo_29-09-08The nine WOZA members namely Loveness Ndlovu, Violet Nxumalo. Emnaculate Sibanda, Elma Nyathi, Phephelaphi Aruchupetu, Violet Dube, Silibaziso Mpofu, Hlalani Ncube and Nokuthaba Ndlovu, who were arrested on Saturday 06 August 2016 together with WOZA leader Jenni Williams are expected to appear at Bulawayo Magistrates Court housed at Tredgold Building on Monday 08 August 2016.

Williams and the WOZA members, who are represented by Mehluli Dube, Solomon Mguni and Lizwe Jamela of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights were charged with contravening Section 46 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23 for allegedly interfering with the ordinary comfort, convenience, peace or quiet of the public.

Police officers claimed that the WOZA members created a nuisance at Queens Sports Club, a charge which they all deny in their warned and cautioned statements which were recorded on Sunday 07 August 2016.

Meanwhile, police in Bulawayo on Saturday 07 August 2016 released without preferring charges against Samuel Meso, Kudzai Hove, Gift Ostallos Siziba and Rodwell Nyika, who were picked up and quizzed for allegedly wearing graduation gowns during the Zimbabwe-New Zealand cricket match at Queens Sports Club.The four, who were represented by Jamela of ZLHR were “profiled” as in having their details noted down by police officers before being set free.
