Police question journalist over war vets communiqué

Richard Chidza senior reporter with NewsDay was on 11 August 2016 questioned by the police in Harare in connection with the source of a communiqué issued by Zimbabwe’s war veterans which denounced President Robert Mugabe as dictator.

war veterans marchOfficer Commanding CID  Law and Order, Assistant Commissioner Crispen Makedenge, wanted Chidza to disclose who had given him the communiqué when he covered the war veterans’ meeting in Harare last month.

Police recorded a statement from Chidza before releasing him without charges.

In conducting their investigations the police should be guided by the need to respect the Constitution. The confidentiality of journalists’ sources is protected by the Constitution and any journalist who refuses to disclose sources of news will be acting within their constitutionally guaranteed rights.
