The tournament is the brainchild of Tafadzwa Katiyo who has been doing some tremendous partnership efforts with the Zimbabwe Chess Foundation which is led by Fide Arbiter Elect Chenjerai Madamombe. She spearheaded the inclusive inclusion of the Hearing Impaired learners so that they could also take part in some active chess playing in different tournaments and also ensuring that they also play together with the able-bodied.
This tournament will include both the able-bodied the physically challenged and the hearing impaired. This will be a tournament of its own kind which includes all these players at the same venue. The players will not pay anything for registration. It will be free of charge and this goes a long way in the promotion of the game of chess at both primary and secondary level. Already more than 200 players have registered for the tournament. At first only 200 players were supposed to register to play, but however, the number skyrocketed to almost 300 participants.
The organisers’ and the sponsors have organised some free feeding for the players as well as some t-shirts as they will be taking part. The tournament’s name is from Tafadzwa’s late son who was named Kupakwashe as she believes in giving. It was the Lord who gave and it was also God who took. She also had a vision that the boy would be a great chess player but this was not to be as our plans are not the plans of God sometimes. The Lovely son passed on a week after being born in April last year.
So this is in memory of her late son. The tournament will be held at Andy Miller Hall at the Showgrounds in Harare.The games will be 30/30 per player and it will be a Swiss 5 round tournament with some fabulous prizes. The winners will get some medals as prizes. The Chief Arbiter for the tournament will be International Arbiter Simbarashe Murimi who will be assisted by Michael Musekiwa and other registered Arbiters to ensure that the event will be run smoothly.
